Bring Me the Buns!

26 Jan

I’m told that if I ask politely, the grocery store will order special things for me. If this is the truth, I’m so excited. You see, I have this problem … a few weeks ago, I told you about the most amazing hot dog buns ever invented {Snuggles} and today I was told the grocery store near my house was no longer carrying them. So, I headed 25 minutes to Publix {they always have them} where the lady in the bakery told me they are discontinued {there is no way this is possible} … Ugh. I know you are thinking, I’m out of my mind and that “it’s just a hot dog bun” but I’m telling you: they are amazing! I was so disappointed – tonight I was going to make chili cheese dogs with the leftover chili from last night {I know, I know. How domestic of me.} In the end, I settled for the regular hot dog buns, but  just don’t think they hold in the chili as well as the U-shaped Snuggles. And, since they are made with more of a pita texture they don’t burn when you try to toast them in the oven. The regular ones did ok though and I felt proud to actually use my leftovers for another purpose! {go me}

On a completely different note: I’m a cheese lover. While at Publix, I was able to snag some of my favorite cheese; Port Salut. I adore this as a snack on some warmed up French bread with some salami. Yum. If you haven’t tried it, I really suggest you do. It’s ah’mazing! {and will be in my belly for lunch tomorrow, if I can wait that long} … Night ya’ll!

{Update} Buh Bye Bounce Bar

20 Jan

Back in January, I bought a Bounce Bar. You know, the new and exciting bar that you stick inside your dryer and supposedly takes the place of having to remember to throw in a dryer sheet every time you dry a load of clothes. Umm… yeah, great idea! And, I’m tempted by pretty packaging {marketing major} so I scooped this one up fairly quickly. It claims to last two months … or until the fabric softener bar starts to ‘melt’ away and reveals a “time to replace” icon. Well, ladies and gentleman, its been one month and 8 days … my clothes are full of static, and there is no smell anymore. {and it isn’t even telling me to replace it yet} I loved it at first, because it gave my clothes an overwhelming fabric softener smell .. which I adore … but, I’m just not as excited about it now, despite the fact that I don’t have to remember to put in a dryer sheet. {or use 10 per load like I usually do} It’s just not THAT useful. I think I would rather go back to dryer sheets where I can regulate how many I put in at a time …

Just my thoughts. I can’t sleep and realized I had left you hanging about my Bounce Bar {I know you were waiting on pins and needles to hear the results} … Now, I guess the next report will be how easily it comes OUT of my machine! Anyone else tried out this contraption?

Le Creuset Ecstacy!

12 Jan

I think I may be on domestic overload. Not only did I get a stand-up mixer for my belated Christmas from “Santa,” but today I found out the set of Le Creuset pots that my grandmother “didn’t bring with her when she moved from Canada to the States” exist. THEY EXIST. And, they are currently IN MY KITCHEN! I just inherited two dutch ovens and a sauce pan!

Imagine the quality of these pots. My grandmother got these in the 70’s – they are older than me – they have lasted over thirty years! They also have a lifetime warranty so, the fact that the saucepan is unfortunately missing its handle may not be too bad. I think they may actually replace it {I’ll keep you posted} And, I can buy some new lid handles right off their website! … Now, the big question is … what … am … I … going … to … cook … FIRST! Holy excitement!

I Need Baking Powder: Stat!

9 Jan

I love to travel. However, interstate and country roads are not my idea of fun. Not being able to drive over 60 mph is grueling punishment for a lead foot like me. Today, I went home. I haven’t seen my family since October – so, two holidays later, there was a lot of catching up to do.

Santa came and brought me a new mixer. I literally opened the box, put it together, made a grocery list, and was at the grocery store within about an hour! I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited to buy vanilla, flour, and baking powder! Oh… and the best part… my mom also gave me a copy of my grandmothers collection of recipes. Back when my parents got married, my grandmother gave my mom a collection of all her recipes. {maybe she was trying to say something} It’s been in our house ever since. I can remember as a little kid, going through the ‘blue binder’ looking for cookie recipes, etc. And, now I have my own copy!

Tonight we decided to bake a Apple Queen Cake out of the recipe book. {who cares if it is 11:30, I need to use my mixer}From the sounds of it, its kinda like a pineapple upside-down cake – only with apples and cherries instead of pineapple. We’ve got it in the oven right now {and took plenty of pictures to blog about it later} … although these are all hand written/photo copied recipes…. and we are thinking that “4 tsp” of baking powder may actually be “1/4 tsp of baking powder” … but we’ll see! Can’t taste that  different can it?! I’ll update you soon! Night Ya’ll!

Tzatziki, Hummus & Flat Bread = Heaven

8 Jan

Everyone has the one joke that ‘haunts’ them at family get-togethers. Mine… well… mine is about food. {shocker} I lived with two brothers and my sister, and according to my mother I could eat all three of them under the table … combined! My mother loves to remind me that the grocery bill once I moved on to college dropped nearly in half. Still to this day, I can sit down and eat an entire tray {Costco sized tray, mind you} of Bagel Bites in one sitting! Perhaps my metabolism will catch up with me one of these days… I am approaching thirty {I can’t bare to utter that word} … but until then, I vow to continue snacking until my heart is content. And today, I had a GREAT idea for a snack. Now, I did not cook a single thing. I opened containers and used the oven for approximately three minutes. Domestic? Hardly. But, I literally moaned when I put this snack in my mouth. If you have even the smallest hunger, head out {run} to the grocery store and pick up the following:

1. Tandoori Naan {Indian Flat Bread}

{Package looks like}

2. Tzatziki Sauce/Dip

3. Garlic Roasted Hummus

4. Carlo Rossi: Pisano {BIG bottle} wink wink

I’m telling you … I was moaning. Clearly, I have a food problem. I brushed the flat bread with some olive oil and then heated it in the oven for about 3-4 minutes… ripped it into pieces and served with the hummus and tzatziki sauce and a good ole’ glass o’wine. Deliciousness. I ran out of the flat bread, or I’d be eating this as we speak .. crumbs on the keyboard and all. Please check for these items {or similar} at your grocery store. Ah’mazing!

Snuggle My Dog

6 Jan

My lack of domesticity got the best of me tonight. I fully intended on making Pho {beef noodle soup} because it is so cold outside! {and I wanted to post some pictures with the recipe on my blog} I even drove to the grocery store, maneuvered through after-school soccer mom grocery rush, and even returned my cart to the buggy-collector {HUGE pet peeve: Return Your Cart!} … I got all the way home and decided: It’s hot dogs for dinner!

Ok, don’t go screaming your head off. Hot dogs can be a great dinner! Might I recommend: Hebrew National Beef Franks! They are Kosher, so no artificial colors or flavors and no by-products … they taste simply amazing. And, I don’t have to worry about eating parts I can’t identify! {yikes} I paired them with some maple and bacon baked beans {yay for fiber} and a big glass of Stonyfield organic milk, and we were set. The hot dogs are a little pricey, but you can sometimes find coupons. Personally, I don’t mind paying a bit more for a pack of hot dogs that has ingredients I can trust. You can read all about these hot dogs and Kosher food requirements on their website: Hebrew National

While we are on the topic of hot dogs… I must inform you of the most amazing hot dog bun ever created. Snuggles. They are u-shaped, and have no seam at the bottom – so they can hold an incredible amount of toppings without falling apart, dripping, etc. They are perfect for chili cheese dogs, or for someone who likes to have every topping imaginable on their dog. They are usually found in the deli, where the pita bread is kept. If you have never tried these, I’m telling you TRY. I’m not positive, but I feel like they are made out of something similar to a pita bread. They seem ‘lighter’ than a regular hot dog.. not so filling.. so you can enjoy your hot dog more. If that makes any sense at all. Oh, and they also come in wheat. True to their name, they really do snuggle your dog!

As always, if you try this stuff out, I’d love to hear! Hope you all have a great night. Enjoy!

My First {and Second} Domestic Purchases

4 Jan

My family thinks that we should schedule and exorcism because {clearly} some domestic goddess has taken over my body. The last two days, I’ve felt like I could really get the hang of some of this domestic stuff. Between my broccoli {onion} Quiche and my bacon, egg, and toast pods – I’ve been doing pretty well! But then Sunday rolled around… the day of laundry. I loathe laundry. Not the whole process, just the folding. I loathe folding. Two years ago, I bought {splurged on} my very first washer and dryer. I did loads of research {no pun intended} and finally decided on the Whirlpool Duet Sport.

This was one of the best investments I’ve ever made. {And, my first real domestic purchase} Washing time cut in half. Saves water and electricity. Uses less soap. And, I swear the clothes are cleaner! Oh, and the ‘whitest whites’ cycle … Ah’mazing! I just wish someone would invent a folding machine. That would make my Sundays much more enjoyable. My only ‘complaint’ about the Duet Sport is that there is always some water left in the machine .. so, if you don’t leave the door cracked when you aren’t using it – or, if you don’t use the cleaning solvent once a month or so – than you get a smell that could very easily pass for rotten eggs. I hear that this is not a problem specific to the Duet, but to most front loading washers. Perhaps they will find a way to solve this too.

While we are on the topic of domestic purchases I should tell you about my second ever domestic purchase. The Dyson Animal Vac (DC14).  At the time of purchase, we had two dogs {one who seemed to shed her entire coat daily} and were sold when we found out the vacuum was intended specifically for animal hair.

I’m telling you, if you have a dog {or several} this is the machine to go with. When I got home with the new vacuum, I decided to vacuum first with my old one and then go over it with the new one. This thing is so powerful, it was sucking up carpet fiber! About six months later, we moved to a loft that didn’t have one bit of carpet {brushed concrete floors}. I was bummed because I really loved using my vacuum. To my surprise, it worked great on the concrete floors too! So, it was a great investment after all. Nearly two years later .. and I’m still in love! My only complaint: It only comes in purple.

Well, thats all for tonight. Tomorrow, I’m going to attempt another Quiche {ham and swiss this time} and hope that it comes out tastier than my onion conglomeration. Don’t worry thought, I’ll have my camera in hand to document the whole thing! Night Ya’ll
